Data Processing

Legal Data Processing

Data processing is the step between collection and review. Files arrive in every format a business uses; they have to leave in one your review platform, your co-counsel and the other side can all open.

Cascade converts, OCRs, indexes and organizes electronic files, then uploads or delivers them in the format the matter requires.

OCR and file conversion

OCR is what turns an image of a page into something a reviewer can search. Cascade OCRs scanned paper and converted electronic files alike, so a single search runs across the whole collection rather than across whichever half happened to arrive as text.

Conversion to TIFF or PDF standardises a collection that arrived as a mix of formats. The target format is set by what the matter needs: TIFF where images will be endorsed and loaded into a review database, PDF where the set is for circulation and filing.

Organising and delivering the set

Coding and indexing put structure around the files: the fields a reviewer sorts and filters on, populated consistently across the set. For litigation this is the difference between a searchable production and a folder of documents.

Cascade prepares electronic files for delivery and uploads data files into commonly used document management support software. Sets can also be delivered on electronic media where that is what the recipient wants.

Send a description of the collection — what formats it holds, roughly how large it is, and where it has to end up — and we will confirm what we can take and in what form.

Where data processing fits

Most Cascade data processing work sits between two other services: a scanning project that produced images needing OCR and indexing, or an electronic evidence collection that needs converting before review.

Keeping those steps with one vendor is not just convenient. It means one numbering scheme, one index specification and one point of contact when something in the set does not look right, rather than two vendors each pointing at the other.
